Lake Mead National Recreation Area is a vast desert-and-water landscape outside Las Vegas, with multiple access points for recreation on land and water.

A day trip works best when you choose an entrance and activity in advance, then check the relevant pass and current conditions. From A Fisher's Inn Motel, it is about a 45-minute drive; the motel is a motel in Las Vegas.

  • Scale: The recreation area covers 1.5 million acres.
  • Access: It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Getting there: There is no public transportation to the park.
  • Planning: Entrance passes are required while recreating in the park.
Choose an area and activity

Choose an area and activity

Choose your Lake Mead area and activity before you drive, since the recreation area covers 1.5 million acres and has entrances spread across the park.

Lake Mead’s shoreline and surrounding desert offer a range of ways to spend time outdoors, including boating, swimming, fishing and exploring on foot. Your choice helps determine which access point and pass to plan around.

The Narrows through Boulder Canyon and Black Canyon from Promontory Point to Hoover Dam, as well as the Chalk Cliffs north of Hoover Dam, are off-limits areas on the lake.

For an outing on the water, check conditions for your launch area before you set out. If you plan to stay ashore, take care at the water’s edge: the lake’s changing levels can leave shallow areas and submerged debris. These considerations matter when deciding where to spend the day and how to approach the shoreline.

Red Rock Canyon is another Las Vegas day-trip subject covered in the Red Rock Canyon day-trip guide.

Entrance fees and access points

Entrance fees and access points

Lake Mead requires an entrance pass while you recreate in the park, and the right pass depends on how you enter.

The private-vehicle pass costs $25 for one to seven days. A motorcycle pass costs $20 for seven days, while a pass for an individual arriving on foot or by bicycle costs $15 for one to seven days.

The annual entrance pass costs $45 and is valid for one year from the month of purchase. Fees can change, so check the official site before you go.

The National Park Service says there is no public transportation to Lake Mead National Recreation Area, though tour operators transport visitors from many Las Vegas resorts and attractions. Entrance stations are at Boulder Beach, Lake Mead Boulevard, Lake Mead Parkway, Cottonwood Cove, Willow Beach, Katherine Landing and the Lake Mead Headquarters Building.

Temple Bar and Northshore Road entrance stations are closed. Since entrances are spread across the park, match your chosen activity with an access point before driving. If you are weighing a separate outing, the Hoover Dam day-trip guide covers planning for that destination.

Boating, swimming and shoreline safety

Boating, swimming and shoreline safety

Changing water levels and submerged debris make a cautious approach to Lake Mead’s shoreline important.

Lake Mead and Lake Mohave water levels change throughout the year, so take care around shallows and debris when you reach the water. If you are boating, check the weather forecast and marina storm-warning flags before departure. If a storm breaks while you are on the water, seek shelter in a protected cove.

Wear a life jacket while swimming, fishing or playing in the lake. Anyone being towed behind a watercraft must wear a life jacket, and an observer must accompany the boat operator.

Vessels have a separate pass requirement: a daily vessel pass costs $16 and covers seven consecutive days, while an annual vessel pass costs $50 per vessel for one calendar year. Non-motorized vessels do not require a Lake Mead vessel pass.

Facilities and conditions to check

Facilities and conditions to check

The Alan Bible Visitor Center is generally open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., seven days a week.

The Lake Mead Visitor Center is at 10 Lakeshore Road, Boulder City, Nevada 89005. Check the official site before you go for current visitor-center hours and park conditions, especially if your plans depend on a specific facility or launch ramp.

Changing lake levels and maintenance or construction at launch ramps can affect launching. Prepare for longer waits for launch and recovery, and allow flexibility if boating is part of your day.

Monsoon rains between July and September can flood park roads and leave sharp rocks and deep mud on pavement. Conditions can affect access as well as activities, making a current check useful before you head out.

Combining Lake Mead with Hoover Dam

Hoover Dam is part of the Lake Mead landscape, with Black Canyon extending from Promontory Point to the dam.

The connection makes the dam a natural point to consider when planning an outing in the area, but keep the park’s restricted water zones in mind: the Narrows through Boulder Canyon and Black Canyon from Promontory Point to Hoover Dam are off-limits on Lake Mead. The Chalk Cliffs north of Hoover Dam are also off-limits.

If you are planning a dedicated visit to the dam as well, the guide to planning a Hoover Dam day trip from Las Vegas focuses on that outing.
